I love Oaxaca. We got stuck there - our van's transmission went out - for 4 months last year. One of the things I love most is all the amazing little towns that surround the city. Looking forward to reading more of your story.
I'm biased (and also need to see more of Mexico) but if you're going to break down somewhere in Mexico I think you could hardly do better than Oaxaca. Four months is quite a long time though, you got a solid chance to see the area. And I agree, the small towns were actually one of the reasons we wanted to move here. We've got family coming to visit and it's tricky trying to decide where to go and what will have to be skipped over, simply because of a lack of time.
