I’m sure I’m not the only one who subscribed to your newsletter because I wanted to learn more about expat life in Mexico and the process of getting residency. Even before the 2024 election, I was ready to leave the U.S. and would immediately do so if it were financially possible. I just hope that Social Security (and the U.S. gov’t) still exist when I turn 62 and that I can survive until then.
Thanks for your note Wendi! I've got several entries planned for the near future dedicated to the process of obtaining residency, finding a home, and other more concrete aspects of moving to Mexico.
I'm so happy to have already completed the residency process and have my residency card in hand. 3-year temporary renewal coming in 4 weeks. Most likely fast tracking retirement plans because of the election. So thankful to be in a position at 54 to much such a decision.
I hate the idea of leaving family behind. That's the one thing keeping us here. That part is heart-wremching, knowing what they'll be dealing with.
Yep, we're getting those messages too. We are glad we got out when we did. I worry that it will be more difficult for those who are just starting the process now.
We have mostly Mexican friends as we’ve lived here in Morelia for over 30 years. None of them have brought up the results of the election. Two American friends here have brought it up first thing. I’m sure there is a segment of the Mexican population that is concerned, but it doesn’t seem very widespread where I am living.
I'm guessing how people in Mexico feel about the election must vary pretty widely. I've been wondering how Trump's day-one tariffs will work when it comes to alcohol production, because it would be deeply destructive for Oaxaca and Jalisco, not to mention the other states that produce agricultural products for export. The degree to which people discuss it will change once they see how it ends up impacting them directly.
I 100% believe in genetic memory theory and I was as crushed as many about the news. It's not even my country but we can't pretend the repercussions won't be felt here.
Sending commiserations. Also feeling reassured about my decision to leave the US and a little sad that the door has closed a little more on the possibility of ever wanting to go back.

I agree!

Thanks for this.
I’m planning a scouting trip soon.
